Garden Assistance

If you are a council tenant, we currently run two schemes that may be able to assist you with your gardening:

Gardening assistance scheme

Tamworth Borough Council’s gardening assistance scheme is for older tenants whose personal circumstances make it impossible for them to maintain their garden. 

The gardening assistance scheme provides safe, reliable and quality assistance with grass and hedge cutting during the growing session, April to October. 

What service is provided? 

The service covers lawn and hedge cutting only and runs throughout the growing session – normally from April to October. Grass will be cut 10 times per year from April to October (weather permitting). Hedges will be trimmed once a year at the end of the season in October.

Who is eligible for the service? 

The gardening assistance scheme is available to tenants of Tamworth Borough Council who meet the following criteria: 

• The tenant is over 75 and not able to maintain their garden due to a registered disability or a medical condition.
• And, do not have anyone over 18 who lives in the property who can do this work. 

Those that do not meet the above criteria will have to seek help from their family or from a private gardening contractor. However in exceptional circumstances we may use our discretion for tenants under the age of 75. We encourage you to complete the form and ask if you’re in any doubt. 

How to apply for the service? 

To apply for the service, complete the online self assessment form.

15 working days after we receive your form, we'll let you know if your application has been accepted. There may be a wait time for this service, so as a space becomes available we'll let you know. 

If you have been previously received garden services i.e. grass and hedge cutting from Tamworth Borough Council, you will have to reapply for the new gardening assistance scheme (with the exception of sheltered housing). 

How much does it cost? 

There is no charge for this service.

Free green bin for communal gardens

If you can answer yes to the questions below you may qualify for a free green bin:

• You are NOT part of the OAP discretionary grass cutting service above, where Street Scene collect and dispose of green waste
• You live in a communal council block or scheme which contains four or more flats, with all residents having access to communal space
• Communal space has identified green waste and is on housing land
• Residents already use a green bin for their communal areas
• You will be the named contact within the block that will be responsible for putting the bin out for collection and collecting it back in

If the scheme is abused (including issues with contaminated waste) the service will be withdrawn and we will review it annually.
